The Practical Nursing program prepares students to participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care in hospitals and extended care facilities.
Practical Nursing students are required to participate in clinical experience. PN students are introduced to the clinical area early in the program. Theory and clinical procedures are integrated to reinforce learning.
Practical Nursing training classes are offered full time days only at the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Campus. Class offerings are determined by enrollment, as well as the availability of clinical sites and instructor availability. In addition to lecture and laboratory instruction, clinical practice is required. It is essential that Practical Nursing Training students have their own transportation to travel to the clinical sites.
- High School Diploma or state-issued GED® Diploma is required prior to entry.
All classes offered at ATC are full time. The length of this program is 1350 hours (approximately 1 year).
A certificate of completion is issued at the successful completion of the Practical Nursing Training program in accordance with state guidelines. Graduates are entitled to take the NCLEX-PN licensure examination.
The Florida State Board of Nursing will issue a license to those who pass the examination. Successful completion of the Practical Nursing course may be used toward an AS or BS Degree.
Industry Certification & State Credential Exams:
Completing students will be eligible to take the following industry certification exams: NCLEX Practical Nursing Exam and State of Florida Ready to Work.
College Credit Transfer Opportunity and / or Advanced Credit:
Upon completion of the program and meeting eligibility requirements, including the attainment of an aligned industry credential, students may be awarded up to 13 credits toward an Associates Degree by Broward College or up to 10 credits by the Florida College System. Additional college credit may be awarded with the attainment of additional industry credentials.
IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING REGISTRATION: COMPLETION OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY INTO THE PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM MAY TAKE A MINIMUM OF THREE WEEKS. PLEASE ALLOW SUFFICIENT TIME PRIOR TO THE REGISTRATION PERIOD TO COMPLETE ALL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS.
Potential PN Students must take the TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) or qualify for the the Basic Skills exemption, and TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) and achieve minimum levels PRIOR TO REGISTRATION. Details for entry into the program will be explained at a required PN-specific orientation. Students enrolling in any Health Science Education program must undergo a Level II criminal background check and drug screening, per The Joint Commission. Students who do not have a valid social security number may encounter difficulty with certain state licensing agencies and registries. Contact the program counselor for specific information.
